DIY Hand and Body Scrub for Silky Skin

While we talk a lot about skin care and facial products, it's very important not to neglect your body. Often times, our skin can get dry and feeling rough as a result of the sun, dry air and cold weather. To remedy this, we typically go straight to a body cream, although it's important to get rid of those dead skin cells before you apply any sort of moisturizer. This way your products are better able to penetrate your skin. To do this, you'll need a good body scrub. And we love a good DIY Hand and Body Scrub.

While you can find a number of quality body scrubs on the market, it's sometimes fun to make your own. It's also great to be able to add the ingredients you want, knowing what your skin needs. Sometimes the natural and simpler ways are better right? Follow these directions for a DIY Hand and Body Scrub that will instantly moisturize your skin leaving you radiant and dewy all day long.

What You'll Need:

DIY Hand and Body Scrub

Exfoliant: You have a few options here. Below are some great choices when it comes to physical exfoliants.

Epsom Salt

Ground Coffee

Brown Sugar

Oatmeal

Granulated Sugar

Feel free to mix two of your favorite exfoliants, although you'll want to use a ratio of 1/2 cup of each.

Carrier Oil: A carrier oil is a vegetable-derived oil often used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. They are named such because they help to carry the essential oil on to the skin. Below you'll find a few great options that deliver powerful nutrients and benefits to the skin.

DIY Hand and Body Scrub

1/4 cup of your favorite carrier oil:

Sweet Almond Oil

Avocado Oil

Coconut Oil

Jojoba Oil

Olive Oil

Essential Oil: These are highly-concentrated and aromatic oils which have been extracted from plants. Essential oils are commonly used in aromatherapy as they contain soothing and medicinal qualities. Depending on the types of scents you like, below are several options for essential oils you can add to your scrub. Be creative and feel free to mix your favorite scents!

DIY Hand and Body Scrub

10 drops of your favorite essential oil:

Rose Oil

Grapefruit Oil

Eucalyptus Oil

Peppermint Oil

Lemongrass Oil

Lavender Oil

Sweet Orange Oil

Cinnamon Oil

Jasmine Oil

Ylang Ylang Oil

Directions:

Mix your ingredients together lightly with a spoon. Do not over-mix as this will thin out the scrub. Pour the mixture in a container of your choosing.

How to Use:

Apply a small amount of the scrub to dry skin and rub in circular motions. Hint- because sugar will dissolve in water relatively quickly, it helps to apply this scrub to dry skin first. This also helps to increase the level of exfoliation you will experience. The circular motions work to increase circulation and smooth the oil into your skin, leaving behind a soft layer of moisture so additional moisturizers are not needed.  As you circulate the scrub, the aromas of the essential oils will be released into the air, providing a relaxing experience. You'll also find that this scrub leaves your skin lightly scented which is a nice added benefit!

Using this scrub twice a week will allow you to enjoy the benefits of soft, silky skin all day long, even during the colder months. You'll also notice that the consistent exfoliation and nourishment of the oil provide that extra radiance to your skin.
