Including active ingredients in your skin care is one of the best way to create noticeable change in the look and health of your skin.

In this post, we’re going to discuss what it means to be an active ingredient a well as share some of the best ones to look for depending on what changes you want to see in your skin.

What is an Active Ingredient?

Active ingredients are those that have been scientifically shown to produce a biological effect in the skin. You may recognize this term from reading the back of products that contain drugs meant to fulfill a specific purpose. For example, if your lip balm contains sunscreen, it will often have the sunscreen listed as an active ingredient on the label.

As you’re researching different products, you may also notice that while active is a scientific term, it is also used frequently in skincare to refer to any ingredient that has been found to be effective at creating results.

Now that we’ve got our definitions straight, we’re going to discuss several active ingredients that are particularly effective in skincare.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide is a powerful acne-fighting ingredient. It works by breaking down the dirt and oil within the pores that promote acne-causing bacteria. This helps to clear and heal breakouts faster. If you have acne-prone skin, then this is one ingredient you may want to consider incorporating in your skincare.

Glycerin

Glycerin is is a humectant which means that it works by drawing moisture from the environment. A product that contains glycerin will collect moisture from the air and deliver it to the skin, helping skin cells to retain water. Glycerin is a natural, plant-derived substance that is great not only for the skin, but also the hair. If you have dry skin or hair, then you may want to look for this ingredient in your products, as it will help to keep your skin/hair hydrated and moisturized throughout the day.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is another naturally occurring substance that like glycerin, is a humectant. Therefore it also works by drawing moisture from the environment and delivering it to the skin. This ingredient has been popular in skincare products aimed at maintaining the skin’s hydration levels. Hyaluronic acid is a very effective ingredient for all skin types because it helps to create a balanced level of hydration.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid as an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), a chemical exfoliant that works by breaking down the bonds between dead, dry skin cells. This results in a smoother, more radiant complexion. This exfoliant can prove very effective for those who have uneven skin tone and texture.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is another Alpha Hydroxy Acid that works by dissolving dead skin cells. Though it’s similar to glycolic acid, it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply. Therefore it works more gently and may be preferred for more sensitive skin types. This AHA is also good for reversing signs of aging, smoothing skin texture, evening tone and minimizing pores.

Retinol

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative and works by increasing the skin’s collagen production. When used consistently, it can work wonderfully for mature skin and those experiencing skin discoloration and scarring.

Niacinamide

Last but certainly not least, niacinamide is a great active ingredient to look for in your moisturizers especially. This vitamin B derivative is very effective at helping the skin to retain moisture and fade acne scarring and discoloration. This is a great ingredient for all skin types.
